Get to know Colin!

Who are you, what is your role and how long have you been at LIVES

My name is Colin Tym. I am a Community First Responder and joined LIVES some 19 years ago. I joined LIVES to support my local community as a basic responder, moved up to intermediate, enhanced intermediate, and then FREC 3. As I reached my milestone birthday I dropped back to a Level 2 responder.

What does my day to day look like?

As people say, how did I find time to go to work before retirement? I find it more and more difficult to fit in the shifts that I would like to, but constantly ask myself if I can fit another couple of hours in today, the days seem to get shorter.

What’s something about your role that might surprise somebody reading this article?

I have worked in a variety of roles for LIVES. I have been coordinator and treasurer for my local group, and I have taken part in training on the casual acting team for a short period. I currently work on the CPR champions team demonstrating the use of defibs and CPR in the community. I also keep an eye on the community defibrillators in three different local villages by doing monthly checks.

Why should people support LIVES?

LIVES was created to give the people of Lincolnshire a better experience of emergency medicine by having responders available across the county. I share this belief along with the vast army of responders volunteering for LIVES, but this ethos can only be completed if responders come forward, the time commitment has increased over the years that I have been involved and this puts many off from volunteering but without the training and support given by this organisation then this county would be in a much poorer state of health. I always enjoy telling people about the wonderful work done by LIVES and have received much financial support as a result:-  there are still many people out there in this county who do not know who LIVES are!
